Children are often forced to talk about their emotional struggle with people they know, such as parents and teachers. But this can often leave the child feeling self-conscious and judged. Therapies for children create safe spaces for honest and forthright conversations.
It's often harder for children to express themselves and develop trust, that's why children's therapists use tools such as crafts, play and group activities as the basis for therapy. The reading of a story, for example, may be used to demonstrate positive emotions such as trust, empathy and honesty.
Psychotherapy for children is often an interactive process. For instance, a child may feel more comfortable communicating negative emotions through the medium of art. Some children prefer talking, and others respond to a combination of both.
Children can experience symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress and other mental health issues in the same way adults do. With the right approach, children can enjoy the following benefits of therapy:
Our expert Yvette Winstone has worked with mental health for over 15 years studying psychology and specialises in CBT. During this time she has worked with individuals providing CBT for anxiety, depression, OCD, Phobias, emetophobia as well as many other presenting problems. She specialises in providing therapy to children and young people from the ages of 6-25. Working in schools and education across South Wales means that she has experience and awareness of issues that can present in educational settings for young people. Including Neurodiversity and the assessment process, safeguarding and risk. Throughout her career she has worked closely with social services and multidisciplinary teams to provide therapy for children in care settings; attending frequent meetings and working with other professionals to ensure the young person is at the forefront at all times.
Children can sometimes find it difficult to express what they’re feeling, and parents may be unsure how best to support them. Our child therapists provide a warm, safe, and non-judgemental environment where young people can share their thoughts in their own way and at their own pace. Sessions are confidential and age-appropriate, using approaches that help children explore the emotional, social, or behavioural factors behind their challenges. Working together, we aim to build understanding, resilience, and practical tools that support the child’s overall wellbeing and development.
