What Is Counselling and How Does It Differ from Psychotherapy?

Counselling and psychotherapy are closely related talking therapies, but they differ in depth, scope, and focus. Counselling typically supports individuals through specific challenges or life events, helping them develop coping strategies and improve day-to-day wellbeing. Psychotherapy works at a deeper level, exploring long-standing patterns, underlying emotions, and the root causes of psychological difficulties. While counsellors are trained to provide structured, short to medium-term support, psychotherapists undertake more extensive training to work with complex or enduring mental health concerns. Both roles are highly skilled and complementary, offering different but equally valuable pathways to improved mental health.
